The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the second oldest motor sports race in America and a long-standing tradition in Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region. First competed in 1916 and this year marks the 90th running of the "Race to the Clouds."
In 2012, the race will take place on Sunday, July 8 with race related events all week long. Fan Fest, on Friday, July 6 in downtown Colorado Springs, will feature motorcycle jumpers, two beer gardens, a chili cook-off, live bands and the Denver Bronco Cheerleaders and is expected to draw over 35,000 spectators.
The race is run on a 12.42 mile course with 156 turns that begins at 9,390 feet and finishes at the 14,110 foot summit of America’s Mountain; Pikes Peak! As the drivers climb toward the summit, the thin air slows reflexes and saps muscle strength. The thin air also robs engines of 30% of their power at the summit. Competitors and vehicles must be in top shape simply to finish...let alone win!
This year the race has 16 classes and features a variety of automotive, exhibition, open wheel, super stock car, and motorcycle classes with a field approaching 200 competitors.
Race Week begins Tuesday, July 3 with Tech Inspection at Pikes Peak International Raceway (PPIR) in Fountain, Colorado. Every vehicle undergoes a rigorous inspection with a concentration on safety issues. That evening there will be meetings for all the riders and drivers at the Raceway. Practice and qualifying takes place Wednesday through Friday from 5:30 to 9:30 am on Pikes Peak.
The current record is 09:51.278 and was set by Nobuhiro Tajima in 2011.
There is no other race course in the world like the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. That is why it attracts race crews that are willing to spend several hundred thousand dollars and months of preperation to compete for the right to be the King of the Mountain.

BTW staza će po prvi puta biti cijela asfaltirana, tako da rekord gotovo sigurno pada. Negativno je što će vjerojatno biti sve manje stojeva u stilu Escuda itd.

Team APEV and Monster Sports announce EV racer for Pikes Peak Hill Climb
Team APEV (Association for the Promotion of Electric Vehicles) has announced plans to enter an electric vehicle in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
Details are limited, but the prototype was jointly developed with Monster Sports and will be driven by Nobuhiro Tajima who was won the event for the past six years. Despite the lack of information, the image suggests the car will feature aerodynamic styling, a closed canopy and a massive rear wing.
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb takes place on July 8th, so expect to learn more in the coming months

Mitsubishi has unveiled the i-MiEV Evolution, ahead of its racing debut at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
Based on the production model, the race car features a tube-frame chassis, an aerodynamic body kit and a prominent rear spoiler. It will be driven by Hiroshi Masuoka, who has previously won the Dakar Rally.
Motivation comes from a 35 kWh battery which powers three electric motors (one front, two rear) that give the model an all-wheel drive system and a combined output of 326 PS (240 kW / 322 hp).
Mitsubishi will also enter an i-MiEV that has been outfitted with a revised front bumper and a roll cage. It will be driven by Beccy Gordon, who is an American off-road racer.

Ima dosta open wheelera, nadam se nekom dobrom vremenu... Unlimited klasa, hmm mislim da je Dacia favorit. Ko bi reka, nakon toga će pobjedu samo tako forsirati u reklamne svrhe. Veseli me Walther Rorhl, nadam se da će opet ispeglati Audija kako je samo on to znao.

Virujem da razlog leži u tome što nije bilo tvorničkih unlimited ekipa. Ne znam što je sa Daciom bilo, a i ova ostala ćuda od po 800 konja nisu ništa napravila. I Tajima je negdje izostao, a Rhys valjda jedini sa dovoljno konja pod haubom i sa znanjem staze. Očekivali puno više, dobili ništa... Do sljedeće godine ;D

Zanimljivo da u listi prijavljenih piše da će Tajima voziti electric bolid. Očito neka pogreška. Al svejedno smatram da će Loeb smazati sve ko dobar dan. Ja bih čak ciljao na 9:30, tuda negdi... Naravno ako bude sve u redu i po planu sa bolidom.

Bilo bi idealno da budu obje i ona treca - napola, dok je jos nisu citavu asfaltirali.
A meni je osobno GT voznja po makadamu fantasticna, na Eigeru onom velikom mi je apsolutno najbolja Rally voznja od svih staza u GT5.

"I feel very confident with the car," Loeb said. "That's a reassuring start, if only because of the speeds we get up to here.
"We are already getting close to the limit in many places. All we need to do now is make some detail changes and we will be ready for the big day."
Peugeot's sport director Bruno Famin added: "The result of the weekend is completely positive. Our 'beast' seems to suit Sebastien, to the extent that we have hardly made any changes to its set-up.
"The car's potential is borne out by the fact that we posted the fastest time on each run.
"The chief lesson is that the 208 T16 Pikes Peak is a well-sorted car and that our busy programme in the past four months seems to have taken us in the right direction."
Loeb will participate in three more official practice sessions at the end of this week. The main event takes place on June 30.

Lexus has partnered with Tony Hawk Foundation to create a fan based decal which will be featured on the Lexus IS F CCS-R set to race at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb 2013. They are doing this by featuring 14,000 names of fans on the car, and to do this, social media is the gateway. On Facebook they wrote a post asking people to comment on it, those names will automatically be featured in the car.

E da, to je ono što ja očekujem od GT7. Ozbiljnije PC simulacije već imaju taj zvuk. Doživljaj vožnje i osjećaj snage automobila je zbog toga drastično unaprijeđena. Ne treba nikakav 7.1 sound, dovoljene su malo kvalitetnije stereo slušalice :)
A ovaj porše je zvijerčina. Kako se samo lijepo čuje dok se oslobađa snaga motora kroz okretaje :o. Da mi je to provozati... :P

Loeb completed the 5.1-mile qualifying run in 3m26.728s, 23 seconds ahead of Romain Dumas, who was driving a Norma prototype in the unlimited class, which includes 13 cars this year.
"Sebastien completed two clean qualifying runs with no problems at all," said Peugeot's project chief Jean-Christophe Pallier. "We're happy with the set-up of the car but we're not taking anything at all for granted.
"I'm sure we not seen the ultimate pace of our rivals yet. Now the target is to stay fully focussed to achieve our objectives.

Nekako čudno... Baš me interesira što je točno bilo da mu je tako stražnji u trenu pobjegao. Nije prije toga pretjerano trznuo volanom da bi auto unestabilio. Bio je prilično brzi desni, ali prošli lijevi auto je sasvim lijepo išao.
Trenutak prije tog kobnog desnog malo je više gasom radio. Prvo pustio, pa pritisnuo malo, pa onda jače i u tom trenutku je počela pirueta. Ali ne vjerujem da je to bio razlog. Mislim da je došlo do neke mehaničke greške. Ko da je u tom trenutku izgubio stražnji downfoce (kao da nema krilce)... Ili ulje na cesti, ili stražnja lijeva pukla... ??? Mada se vidi da je i dosta prašine/zemlje bilo uz tom zavoju.
Jel su objavili što se točno dogodilo? Baš me interesira...

Da, i meni je ćudno. Prvo sam pomislio nekakvo ulje ili nešto. Jer stvarno je prelagano pobiga. Doduše, 900+hp i malo više gasa uvik može iznenaditi.

Probat cu jos posli naci po kojem redu nastupaju. Po logici, unlimited bi tribali zadnji jer su oni najzanimljiviji i gotovo sigurno ruse rekord pa je bolje da se to cuva za kraj. :)

Ovo za dymonda samo kažem da je pao na putu do gori 2 puta i opet stigao na cilj kao 4. ili 5. A prijenos je katastrofa. U životu nisam vidio gori.
Jedan motorist je imao incident (valjda se motor zapalia). Helikopterom je rebačen u bolnicu i kažu da je ozbiljno stanje. Držim fige! :-\
Sad bi trebao Loeb krenuti...

Zasad gledam, imal judi koji su sami štopali pa ispada 8:13. Pitanje koliko je toćno to.

Pet minuta nakon što je prošao ciljem i dalje ne znamo. Komentatori pojma nemaju. Prijenos se svodio na to da kamerman pokušava naciljati auto jer se pilot helića svom silom trudio da ovaj ništa ne može snimiti. Druga polovica uspona se ništa nije vidilo jer im je pucao signal.
Komentatori su smješteni jako blizu starta pa se skoro cijelo vrijeme čulo turiranje auta u pozadini.
I nakon par minuta čekanja rezulatat i dalje nisu imali pojma o vremenu pa su stavili reklame.

After months of anticipation, Sébastien Loeb has shattered the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb record with a breath-taking time of 8m13.878s in the 208 T16 Pikes Peak. The Frenchman negotiated the 20 kilometres and 156 corners of the mountain at an average speed of 145kph.
Loeb’s time blitzed the previous best of 9m46.164s, set by Rhys Millen last year, with the top three finishers all beating the 2012 record. “For me, this was the race of the year,” said Loeb at the finish, 4300 metres high in the Rocky Mountains. “At the beginning of my run there was a bit of pressure for sure because I knew there was so much work and investment from Peugeot and all the partners. Now, after all the practice, it was just down to me and I had to perform.”
Loeb started first of the Unlimited class cars, unleashing his 875-horsepower car onto the mountain this morning after all the motorcycle competitors had passed through. However there were a number of delays before he started, which meant that the team began to worry about bad weather: a common feature of Pikes Peak at high altitude. “When I was on the start line waiting to go, I could actually see the clouds closing in at the top of the mountain,” said Loeb. “I remember thinking that if we didn’t get going soon, it would be really difficult.”
As it was, Loeb blasted his 208 T16 Pikes Peak through the clouds in a time that was even quicker than Peugeot Sport’s computer had thought was possible. The ideal theoretical time – calculated using data from Loeb’s practice runs up the Colorado mountain – was 8m15s. The nine-time world rally champion somehow managed to shave two seconds off that.
“I’m really happy as that was a very good run in the end,” said Loeb. “I really didn’t expect anything better than 8m1...

Sebastien Loeb says he is unlikely to return to Pikes Peak to try to beat the new record he set in the famous hill climb event on Sunday.
Driving the 208 T16 Peugeot built specially for Pikes Peak, Loeb set a time of 8m13.878s, over a minute and a half quicker than the previous benchmark.
Asked if he was tempted to come back in 2014 to improve on that time, Loeb said the dangers of the event meant it was likely to be a one-off attempt.
"To be honest, that's not something we've spoken about," he said of a future Pikes Peak return.
"I've really enjoyed this but we'll see what happens and who tries to break the record.
"The feeling is amazing, but the risks are also high."
Former record-holder Rhys Millen, who set a personal best on Sunday but was 49 seconds slower than Loeb, reckons the nine-time World Rally champion's benchmark might always be out of reach.
"They were unbeatable," said Millen. "That time they set was simply incredible. When will it be beaten? It might never be..."
Peugeot's simulation suggested an 8m15s lap might be possible. Loeb ultimately went two seconds faster still.
"Before the start I didn't really know if I should push absolutely to the maximum or if I should just push to a comfortable pace, in order to make sure of the victory," he said.
"In the end, I decided to push to the limit.
"You have the downforce of a Le Mans car, with acceleration that is faster than a Formula 1 car, going through scenery that is a bit like rallying.
"It just comes out of corners like a cannonball; the traction is astounding.
"With steep drops either side, and so much work and investment going into this programme, you obviously can't make any mistakes... It's 20 kilometres of taking risks.
"There was a certain amount of pressure that I felt before the start, that's true."

Bit ce zanimljiv ovogodisnji pikes peak. Po prvi puta dolazi pravi bolid (bolid koji se natjecao u 24h Daytone) te su direktno najavili pohod na Loebov rekord. Ove godine testiraju i vidjet ce gdje ce stajati a sljedece ce ici na pravi napad.
Uz Tajimu i Millena bit ce ovo odlican dodatak u utrci.

S tim da Millen ima isto kao Tajima, 1megawatt snage na raspolaganju.
Po mom misljenju, Tajima je prestar za napadati ikakve rekorde. Odnosno mozda i srusi rekord za elektricna vozila, ali da je taj isti bolid vozio netko mladji, sa vise cojones, onda bi rekord bio jos nizi.
Vidit cemo ove godine dokle su dogurali elektro pogoni. Vec sada imaju sve na raspolaganju da se cak i dohvati rekord Loeba.
Velika prednost Peugeota je sjajna aerodinamika. Tako da i sa 800ks i 800kg ima sve sto treba. Elektricni jos zaostaju u dijelu aerodinamike i tezine bolida.

Znam saml da je Gran Turismo glavni sponzor. Ali nisam cuo (jos) da Kazimir vozi.
