World champion Sebastien Loeb has been forced to retire from Rally GB after being involved in a road accident after the Halfway stage.
The Citroen driver had been running second to rally leader Jari-Matti Latvala. Following crews reported seeing Loeb's car stopped on the road section with damage from a head-on collision, and Citroen has now confirmed that its driver had an impact with a car driving the wrong way.
Loeb, co-driver Daniel Elena and the occupants of the other car are all unhurt.
Citroen team manager Sven Smeets told AUTOSPORT that the incident had occurred on a very narrow section of road on the way from Halfway to Crychan.
"We can confirm Sebastien's had an accident on the road," he said. "A European spectator was on the wrong side of the road. Sebastien and Daniel are okay but they are out of the event.
"We can repair the car here but there's nothing they can do at the side of the road."
The incident gives Latvala a massive lead over Mads Ostberg's Stobart Ford with five stages to go.
Had Loeb's title rival Mikko Hirvonen still been in the rally, the road crash would have almost certainly cost Loeb the championship. Hirvonen retired on Friday after damaging his Ford's radiator when he spun on Dyfnant.
