Renault heading for BTCC return in 2014

Renault is heading for a return to the British Touring Car Championship for the first time in over a decade next season.

Welsh chartered engineer Philip Morgan, whose son Alex races in the Renault Clio Cup UK, has commissioned the build of two Renault Megane 3 NGTC cars to race in next year's BTCC.

Morgan, who has started the project through his MDA Wheels business, intends to lease the cars to teams on a customer basis.

He hopes eventually to emulate works Honda outfit Team Dynamics (which built NGTC Civics for customers) with support from Renault.

Morgan said: "I bought the ex-Triple Eight Vauxhall Astra VXRs for Alex to do white-knuckle rides in with his mates and from that got the bug for touring cars.

"When I looked at the NGTC regs I realised we could do a car. We will have two customer cars on the grid next year and we're talking to several teams about running them.

"If we do a good job and our cars run sensibly then we hope to emulate the job Team Dynamics has done."

Morgan said his Meganes would be built by engineering firm OSE in conjunction with rally car builder Harry Hockly Motorsport.

He revealed they would run initially with a Swindon-built TOCA engine, but with the possibility of switching to Renault power later.

"I'm the supplier and I'll lease the cars having commissioned them," Morgan added.

"The development car should be ready for a test programme in November.

"We have to build a car to the best of our ability and get it out there. We've had enormous interest so far."
